Power system protection

Power system protection is a branch of electrical power engineering that deals with the protection of electrical power systems from faults through the disconnection of faulted parts from the rest of the electrical network.

What is the need of power system protection?

Objective of Power System Protection: The main objective of using power system protection is to detach the faulty section from the system to make the rest of the portion work without any disturbance. In addition to this, it is used for the protection of power system and prevent the flow of fault current.

What are the components of power system protection?

There are three principal components of a protection system: Transducer. Protective relay. Circuit breaker.

What are the basic requirements of power system protection?

Power System Protection – Basic Requirements Selectivity: To detect and isolate the faulty item only. 2. Stability: To leave all healthy circuits intact to ensure continuity of supply.

What are types of protection?

It is a usual practice to divide the Types of Protection scheme into two classes viz. primary protection and back-up protection.

What are the 3 types of protective devices?

Electrical Protective Device – Types of Protective Device

  • Fuse Wire or Fuse.
  • MCB – Miniature circuit breaker.
  • ELCB – Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker.
  • ELCB & MCB.
  • Earthing or Grounding.

What is main protection?

The main protection or primary protection is the first line protection which provides quick-acting and selective clearing of a fault within the boundary of the circuit section or element it protects. The main protection is provided in each section of an electrical installation.

What are zones of protection?

“Zones of protection” is one strategy that can be used to provide the level of security demanded today. Protective relay engineers keep utility grids and equipment safe from faults and system unbalances by dividing the grid into zones, each with a unique protection scheme. Overlapping zones provide backup protection.

How does protection system work?

Protective relays and relaying systems detect abnormal conditions like faults in electrical circuits and automatically operate the switchgear to isolate faulty equipment from the system as quick as possible. This limits the damage at the fault location and prevents the effects of the fault spreading into the system.

What are the types of faults in power system?

There are mainly three types namely line to ground (L-G), line to line (L-L) and double line to ground (LL-G) faults. Line to ground fault (L-G) is most common fault and 65-70 percent of faults are of this type. It causes the conductor to make contact with earth or ground.

What are the different types of protection devices used in power system?

Some examples of electrical protection devices are lightning arresters, surge protectors, fuses, relays, circuit breakers, reclosers, and other devices. Every electrical circuit has a maximum voltage or amperage.

What are the qualities of protection system?

Essential Qualities of Protection Systems:

  • reliability;
  • selectivity;
  • fastness of operation; and.
  • discrimination.

What is type of relay?

The three main types of relays are electromechanical, solid-state, and reed.

What is a relay in power system?

In electrical engineering, a protective relay is a relay device designed to trip a circuit breaker when a fault is detected.

What is MCCB circuit breaker?

A moulded case circuit breaker (MCCB) is a type of electrical protection device that is used to protect the electrical circuit from excessive current, which can cause overload or short circuit.

What are power protection devices give examples?

Circuit protection devices are safety components used in a variety of applications, ranging from smartphones and laptops to medical and wireless communications equipment. These components include electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection devices, surge protectors, fuses, and circuit breakers.

What protects an electrical circuit?

In electrical circuits, a fuse is an electrical device used to protect the circuit from overcurrent. It consists of a metal strip that liquefies when the flow of current through it is high.

What are the two basic types of circuit protection devices?

There are two general categories of circuit protection: 1) Fuses 2) Electro-mechanical circuit breakers.

What is the function of relay?

A relay allows circuits to be switched by electrical equipment: for example, a timer circuit with a relay could switch power at a preset time. For many years relays were the standard method of controlling industrial electronic systems.

What is primary and back up protection?

Primary protection (Main protection) is the essential protection provided for protecting an equivalent/machine or a part of the power system. As a precautionary measure, addition protection is generally provided and is called Backup Protection.
